This explains why it was black at 1:30 in the afternoon. I should stay on top of these things.

It's 1:30 in the afternoon.
Jan 19, 2001 - 1 min read
It’s 1:30 in the afternoon. Looking out the window, you’d think it was 1:30 in the morning, with little moon out. It’s black. And raining – very, very hard. It has been like this for the last half hour, nonstop. I’d planned to run errands this afternoon that involved alot of walking around outside. I’ll wait a bit, I think. If I look closely, I can barely see cars in the parking lot a hundred feet away.

I began a yoga class
Jan 18, 2001 - 1 min read
I began a yoga class today. I’ve been doing bits and pieces of yoga for the last few years, just for stretching and internal massage, but this is the first time with a teacher. Coming out of class, I felt like I’d just had a full night of restful sleep. I used to do an hour’s routine every night, but I’ve slacked off dramatically this last year. Recently, I’ve been down to just a pose or two. I’m wanting to get back to my old ways.

Also saved for posterity at the Beeb, the Radio 4 series Dead Ringers used impressionist Jon Culshaw to telephone various businesses in the guise of Tom Baker’s Doctor. The calls are available for listening in readplayer format. My favorite was when the Doctor called Sylvestor McCoy (the most recent Doctor) for help, to merge minds, to solve a terrible problem.

The BBC is preparing to release all of the Doctor Who episodes on DVD, and the man in charge, Ross McGinley, has had a dickens of a time with it.

Backwash is a "WebSurfing Community"
Jan 16, 2001 - 1 min read
Backwash is a “WebSurfing Community” – kind of like Yahoo!’s front page, or a large collaborative weblog. I’d never heard of them before they sent a mess of folks over to my Gobbler visit pages. (If you haven’t yet, visit James Lilek’s original Gobbler site first.)

The History of my Boobs: A Catastrophe in Four Parts. Well written recollections of a woman and her breasts, from discovering at age five she wasn’t allowed to go topless to piercing them at age 23.

The Tech Museum of Innovation
Jan 15, 2001 - 1 min read
The Tech Museum of Innovation publishes the monthly Tech Ten, ten websites that deliver high technology to teachers, students, and families. They’re on a year-long hiatus right now, looking for a new editor (I nominate Mike Gunderloy) but December 1999’s list still looks worth browsing.

Jan 15, 2001 - 1 min read
For months I’ve been asking people if there existed something to turn ordinary speakers into wireless speakers. Because I’ve got plenty of speakers, but I didn’t want to run wires all over my farmhouse. There’s just no good way to hide all the wires like I’ve done in other houses. People all said they thought there was, but no one could actually show me one. Not at the stores, not on the web. Even the Radio Shack wasn’t any help. So imagine my glee when X10 announced they had a new “turn regular speakers into wireless speakers” kit. A bit pricey, but I had enough X10 gift certificates saved up (thanks to their crazy frequent customer rewards program) that it was cheap enough to order two.

I heard on the radio
Jan 13, 2001 - 1 min read
I heard on the radio as I drove home tonight that the national guard unit in my hometown of St. Clair, Missouri, is being sent to Kosovo. My high school sweetheart was (is?) a member of that unit. [ I haven’t had contact with her in about ten years. I sometimes wonder what she’s up to. I know she’s had some hard times since we last spoke, and I hope that, wherever she is, she’s doing OK.] I wonder how many people I know are being sent.
